This collection of Russian Proverbs and sayings is very helpful in learning Russian. Some have predictable meanings that you may already be familiar with. This will help you to improve your Russian Language.

 

Note: Just in case you can't read Russian yet, don't panic. I believe that you can and should learn the Russian cyrillic alphabets in order to learn Russian. Just spend a little time on these highly recommended free Russian lessons and I promise that you too can read cyrillic just like a Russian.

 

легче сказать, чем сделать; or just легко сказать -- easier said than done

человек предполагает, а Бог располагает -- man proposes, but God disposes

человек человеку друг -- all men are brothers

между нами, девочками, говоря -- ≈ between you, me and the lamppost

ему море по колено — he doesn't give a damn

рука руку моет — ≈ you roll my log and I'll roll yours; scratch each other's back

быть в хороших руках — be in good hands

мастер на все руки — Jack of all trades

знать что-л как свои пять пальцев — know something like the back of one's hand

волос долог, да ум короток — long of hair and short of brains

совать нос не в своё дело — stick one's nose into other people's affairs

(мы) сами с усами — we weren't born yesterday

с глаз долой - из сердца вон — out of sight, out of mind

у семи нянек дитя без глазу — ≈ too many cooks spoil the broth

в одно ухо вошло, в другое вышло — in at one ear and out at the other

встать на уши, стоять на ушах — work like mad

язык без костей — loose tongue

решать не разумом, а сердцем — be guided by one's heart, not one's head

куриные мозги — birdbrain

из молодых да ранних — a young upstart; a young man [woman] in a hurry

по старой памяти — ≈ for old times' sake; (по привычке) by habit

старость не радость — getting old is no fun

На лбу написано -- it's written on one's face

Kто платит, тот и заказывает музыку -- Who pays the piper calls the tune

тянуть все ту же песню — ≈ repeating the same old story

будет и на нашей улице праздник — ≈ our day will come

Театр - это такая кафедра, с которой можно много сказать миру (Гоголь) -- Theatre is the rostrum from which one can tell the world a lot . (Gogol)

на вашем [его] месте — if I were you [him]

не место красит человека, а человек место — the position doesn't make the man, the man makes the position

язык до Кеива доведёт (Пушкин) — ≈ a clever tongue will take you anywhere

язык мой - враг мой — my tongue is my enemy

не давши слова, крепись, а давши слово, держись — don't make promises you can't keep

время работает на нас — time is on our side

кто не работает, тот не ест — he who does not work, neither shall he eat

Без труда не вытянешь и рыбку из пруда. -- Without working you can’t even catch a fish in the pond.

ищите и обрящете — seek and ye shall find

что это на тебя нашло? — what's gotten into you?, what has come over you?

нашла коса на камень — ≈ he's met his match this time

учиться на собственных ошибках — learn by one's own mistakes

век живи - век учись — live and learn

глухой угол — godforsaken place

из-за угла — underhandedly; behind sombody's back

сглаживать острые углы — smooth off the rough edges

хотели как лучше, а получилось как всегда — ≈ we tried our best, you know the rest (we failed inspite of all our effort)

не все то золото, что блестит — not all that glitters is gold

Тише едешь - дальше будешь. — Slow and steady wins the race.

ученье - свет, а неученье - тьма — knowledge is light and ignorance is darkness

в кои-то веки — once in a blue moon

В чëм мать родила — in one's birthday suit; naked (lit. as naked as my mother bore me)

отдать последнюю рубашку — share one's last penny (with)

снять с кого-л последнюю рубашку — take someone's last penny

родиться в рубашке — ≈ be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth

своя рубашка ближе к телу — ≈ self comes first, charity begins at home

дело в шляпе — it's in the bag, it's a sure thing

стереть в порошок кого-л — make mincemeat of somebody

дело на мази — things are off to a good start

здоровье дороже денег — health above wealth (lit. health is dearer than money)

молчание - знак согласия — silence means consent

за что купил, за то и продаю — ≈ I am only telling you what I've been told myself

Друзья познаются в беде*. — A friend in need is a freind indeed. / You are really a blessing.

я мыслю, следовательно я существую — I think therefore I am

благими намерениями вымощена дорога в ад — the road to hell is paved with good intentions

не буди лиха пока лихо спит тихо — don't trouble trouble till trouble troubles you (lit. don't awaken the evil while it is sound asleep)
